POSITION SUMMARY
The Social Media & Development Internship position supports Beacon Mental Health’s communications and fundraising efforts by creating engaging digital content and assisting with donor-focused projects. This role is ideal for students or early career professionals interested in nonprofit work and eager to learn how organizations connect with their communities.
The intern will contribute to social media planning, storytelling, content creation, and outreach activities. They will collaborate closely with the Programs and Development teams, gaining hands-on experience across a variety of projects, including communications, event support, donor stewardship, and community engagement. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, detail oriented, a strong communicator, and comfortable writing and creating content for multiple social media platforms.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
• Manage and schedule content for Beacon Mental Health’s social media accounts to ensure consistent, mission aligned engagement across platforms.
• Brainstorm creative campaign ideas and support the development of a content calendar and strategic posting pipeline.
• Monitor activity on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other relevant platforms to stay informed about trends, brand mentions, and engagement opportunities.
• Analyze social media metrics to assess the performance of posts and campaigns, compiling insights and recommendations.
• Engage with followers by responding to comments, messages, and community content to strengthen relationships and grow audience reach.
• Assist with creating and curating digital content, including graphics, stories, short videos, and testimonials.
• Provide recommendations to enhance user experience on social platforms and improve internal communication processes.
• Support the creation of performance reports, campaign summaries, and internal updates for the Development and Programs teams.
• Assist with donor stewardship activities, including drafting posts or messages that highlight impact stories, events, and supporter recognition.
• Collaborate with staff across departments to gather stories, photos, and program updates for use in communications and development materials.
• Assist with graphic design projects, event support, and other development activities on an as needed basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
• Demonstrated experience or coursework related to social media marketing and digital communication.
• Ability to create, edit, and curate content for multiple platforms (e.g., graphics, short videos, stories, written posts).
• Strong online engagement skills, including interacting professionally with followers and monitoring platform activity.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational abilities and attention to detail.
• Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
• Must have completed at least two years of undergraduate academic studies, preferably in communications, marketing, nonprofit management, journalism, or a related field.
Work Hours
• Must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in office located at 3100 NE 83rd Street, KCMO 64119 – remote work is not an option.
• Hours fall between Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
• Scheduling may be flexible within this window based on project deadlines and supervisor approval
